Areas of deeper exploration…
Is structure a prison or does it provide freedom? Ballet and the neurodivergent experience:
Act 2 opens with a mini ballet exploring the lived experiences of ADHD and Autistic dancers. Neurodivergent individuals are often drawn to ballet because it provides a balance of structure, energetic release through movement, clear rules & expectations, and routine without monotony. Neurodivergent dancers are praised for their out of the box thinking while simultaneously criticized for forgetting class combinations. There is comfort for many dancers in the set routine of class (pliés, then tendus, then dégagés, etc.), but they are ripped out of that safe haven the second a teacher or director raises their voice or grabs their body without consent. Exploring neurodivergence could be an entire choreographic research project in itself, but in the framework of this performance it served as an important piece of identity that is very prevalent, but often forgotten, in ballet. My collaborators and I knew what the section was about and I utilized identity conscious casting to bring the piece to life. However, if you (the viewer) take something else away from this section, that is also welcome.
